Barro Colorado (83 images)
I decided to go back to Panama for Thanksgiving this year (yes, from London!) - and my aunt who is in town as well decided to take a trip out to Barro Colorado (which literally means "colored clay". Barro Colorado is the largest island formed during the flooding of the Gatun lake to form the body of water where to boats can cross the Istmus of Panama through the Canal. The island is run by the Smithsonian, and is purely a research institution and tourism is kept to a minimum (and they only walk you around a small portion of the island, vs the areas the researchers have access to). It was quite an interesting trip in the middle of a rainforest and we saw plenty of primates, toucants, a hawk or two, poison frogs and some other odds and ends. Enjoy!
